If you are a student who lives in an area affected by Hurricane Katrina, you may experience delays in receiving your student loan check(s) until the U.S. Postal Service has determined that mail may be received in your area.
Included in the delays are non-federal (private) loan checks sent directly to students and any federal loans disbursed by check to schools. Loan proceeds sent to schools in operation by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) should not be affected.
The U.S. Department of Education provides a Hurricane Katrina Information Web page at www.ifap.ed.gov/eannouncements/katrina.html. The page contains contact phone numbers, the latest updates, and links to various Web sites related to the impact of the hurricane on students, parents, borrowers, colleges and universities, and financial institutions that participate in the Federal higher education student assistance programs.
The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) has set up a helpful Hurricane Katrina Resource page at http://www.NASFAA.org/Katrina.asp to gather student aid-related information as it relates to the effects of Katrina including guidance from the Department of Education.
